Domains

A domain is your unique address on the internet. We provide domestic .fi domains as well as the most popular international domains. Registration and validity of a domain require that the domain is linked to a service containing nameservers (DNS). The services offered in the order include the required nameservers.

Secure your domain name

Domain Registration
Thanks to our automated system, the domain you order is registered immediately after payment. This ensures that no one else can register the same domain.
Note that when placing an order, you must also select a web hosting service for the domain.
Domain Renewal
Domains are valid for 1, 3, or 5 years. Renewal is not included in the contract. You can easily renew your domain 1 month before it expires using our automated system, which sends reminder notifications at regular intervals.
Domain Transfer
For international com/net/org domains, transfers always take at least 5 days. This is the minimum time, and in optimal conditions, the transfer usually takes about a week. Transfers will not succeed if the current registrar does not approve the transfer within the five (5) day period. A domain transfer key (EPP Auth Code) is required, and the transfer lock must not be activated.
FI domains usually transfer within one day, always through the receiving registrar, and require a transfer key from the previous registrar.
Using the EPP interface, you can obtain international domains and the transfer key or registrar change key for your .fi domain directly through your customer panel.

Domain Parking

The parking service allows you to reserve a domain for future use. It is ideal in situations where you don’t yet need web hosting but want to secure the domain. You can also transfer an existing domain to the parking service, keeping unnecessary site costs low while retaining ownership of the domain. Once lost, a domain can be difficult, expensive, or impossible to reclaim.

DynDNS Service

When you are often away from home, there is sometimes a need to access your home computer via SSH or VNC. This can be difficult because most home broadband connections have a dynamic IP address that changes periodically. This can be solved by using a dynamic DNS service. The idea is that the computer periodically checks whether its IP address has changed, and if so, updates the new IP address on the service provider's server, which then redirects it to an easier-to-remember domain name.

Anycast-Based Name Server

Only .fi domains are eligible for an anycast-based name server.

DNSSEC Secures Name Servers

DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) is a service that enhances the security of name servers. DNSSEC acts as a kind of insurance, ensuring that internet users reach the exact website they intend to visit. It protects against attacks targeting the name server system.
DNSSEC ensures that responses to name server queries come from the correct sender and have not been altered. When DNSSEC is active, responses to name server queries are digitally signed.
Each domain in the name server is assigned a unique IP address (e.g., the IP address of www.traficom.fi is 87.239.126.33). DNSSEC technology ensures that the querying computer (e.g., a web browser) sees whether the response received via the name server comes from a server registered as trusted.

Frequently Asked Questions

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions related to our products and services. If you cannot find the answer to your question or want more information, feel free to contact us anytime, and we will be happy to assist you.

  • Ensuring FI Compliance?

It is the responsibility of the FI domain user to check name and trademark registers to ensure there are no obstacles to registering the domain. The information is available through public online services. Links can be found on the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency website: https://www.traficom.fi/fi/viestinta/fi-verkkotunnukset/fi-verkkotunnusten-riita-asiat

  • Using National Characters in .FI Domains?

FI domains can include Finnish-specific letters that differ from the standard Latin alphabet (for example å, ä, and ö). Most software converts these characters into a format understood by domain name systems. However, not all software and keyboards support national characters. Therefore, domains containing national characters are not recommended as primary domains.

  • Allowed Characters in a Domain?

Allowed characters in FI domains include letters a–z, numbers 0–9, hyphen-minus, and the following national characters: á, â, ä, å, č, ď, ğ, ǧ, ǩ, ŋ, õ, ö, š, ţ, ž, ȥ, ǯ FI domains cannot start or end with a hyphen-minus. Domains cannot begin with the characters xn--. The ACE form (ASCII Compatible Encoding) of domains containing national characters always begins with xn--.
Rights for Domains with National Characters
Holding an FI domain does not grant preferential rights to a domain containing national characters (å, ä, ö); such domains are granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
A protected name or trademark containing national characters may correspond to both a domain with and without national characters.
For example, a protected name or trademark ÅÄÖ would correspond to both åäö.fi and aao.fi, while the protected name AAO would correspond only to aao.fi.

    IDN Converter
Domains are always defined in punycode format in the DNS. For example, viestintävirasto.fi in punycode is xn--viestintvirasto-7kb.fi.
You can find out the punycode version of a domain before registration using the IDN converter via this link: https://www.traficom.fi/fi/viestinta/fi-verkkotunnukset/kansallisten-merkkien-kayttaminen-verkkotunnuksessa

  • Domain Transfers?

    1. Request your current provider to remove the domain lock.
    2. Request the domain transfer key and approve the incoming transfer.
    3. Place a transfer order for the domain. You will need the transfer key and must also select a service package. Temporary login credentials will be provided for service use.
    4. Once the transfer order is placed, we initiate the transfer with the provided key. Your current provider will receive a transfer request from us, which they must approve.
    5. The transfer will complete within 2–5 days, depending on the responsiveness of the current provider.
    6. You can obtain domain transfer keys yourself via the customer portal or request them from customer support.

  • Payment Methods and Validity?

The validity of a new domain is always 12 months. Domains can also be renewed for 1–5 years at a time, depending on the domain.
When you make payment via the Nida Web Service customer panel with a current card, the domain name is automatically extended.

  • Domain Terms of Use?

Laws, regulations, and standards governing domain content and usage vary widely. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and hundreds of domain organizations have set rules that apply to all domain users.

Nida Web Service general domain terms of use.

  • What is DNSSEC and How Does it Work?

Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) are specifications by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) that protect certain types of data provided by the DNS (Domain Name System) on IP networks. These DNS extensions provide source authentication of DNS data, verified entity prevention, and data integrity to DNS clients (resolvers), but they do not provide availability or privacy.

DNSSEC works by digitally signing records for DNS queries using public key cryptography. The correct DNSKEY record is validated through a chain of trust that starts with a set of verified public keys in a trusted third-party DNS root zone.
