Email can be read using email client programs, such as:
Microsoft Outlook: Common in professional use and offers versatile features for managing calendars and tasks.
Mozilla Thunderbird: Free and open-source program, a popular alternative.
Apple Mail: Default email program for Mac computers and iOS devices.
Webmail (through browser): Firefox, Edge, Chrome, Safari, Opera.
Mobile Applications: Almost all email services provide their own apps (e.g., Gmail app, Outlook app). The phone’s built-in email apps often support multiple accounts.
To read messages with an email client, the following protocols can be used:
IMAP: Recommended if you read email from multiple devices, because messages remain on the server. Copies stay on the server, allowing the same message to be read on different devices.
POP3: Downloads messages from the server to the computer, often removing them from the server.
WEBMAIL: All email services also include a webmail application, allowing emails to be read and sent via a web browser without installing any additional programs.
All domain email services include free server-based spam filtering using a blacklist of known spam-sending servers. This filters spam from your email traffic before it reaches your inbox.
Content-based filtering can also be enabled per mailbox via the service management interface (Cpanel management).

When using the POP3 protocol, the email client retrieves messages from the server’s Inbox folder to the computer where emails are being read. This means that after retrieval, the Inbox folder on the mail.nida.fi server will be empty. Many email clients have an alternative setting to leave a copy of retrieved emails on the mail server.
The POP3 protocol only retrieves messages from the Inbox folder. The advantage of POP3 is that the mailbox generally never gets full, since emails are downloaded to the local computer. The disadvantage is that emails can only be read from the computer to which they were downloaded.
When using the IMAP protocol, the email client handles emails directly on the server, allowing you to delete or move messages one at a time, or keep all messages on the server. This is especially useful when the same mailbox is accessed from multiple computers, for example, from work and home. For this reason, using the IMAP protocol is recommended.
