An SSL certificate enables encrypted HTTPS traffic for your online store and website. The benefits of an SSL certificate include encrypted HTTPS communication between your e-commerce customers and your store. Other advantages are better search engine ranking for HTTPS pages, which can also reduce the cost of paid search advertising. The lock icon in the address bar creates a trustworthy view of your site in addition to the HTTPS address.
With an SSL certificate, sensitive information such as login credentials and credit card numbers are kept out of reach of malicious users. The issuance criteria for Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates are strictly defined in the EV guidelines, which the issuing authority must follow before issuing an EV SSL certificate:
The entity’s legal, physical, and operational existence must be verified
The entity’s identity must match official records
The entity must have a clear exclusive right to the website being applied for in the EV certificate
The entity must have formally approved the issuance of the EV certificate
With this type of SSL certificate, visitors can see the company name in the address bar.

Organization Validation (OV) SSL certificates are issued only when the certificate authority has verified the applicant’s right to the requested domain. Additionally, the issuing authority examines the organization’s legitimacy with a certain level of accuracy. Information about the organization receiving the OV certificate is also visible as proof of certification when clicking the lock in the address bar. This provides clear additional security for the buyer and website, ensuring the user is interacting with the correct entity. The OV certificate application typically takes a few days, but if all documentation is ready and submitted immediately, issuance can occur in as little as 24 hours.
A Domain Validation (DV) SSL certificate is issued once the certificate authority verifies the applicant’s right to the domain. No organizational legitimacy checks are performed for DV certificates, so the organization’s details do not appear when clicking the lock. The advantage of a DV certificate is its fast issuance, which can sometimes happen in as little as 15 minutes.
Regular DV and EV certificates always protect a single website address at a time, such as www.domain.fi or the same address without the www prefix, domain.fi. Wildcard certificates allow you to protect one main domain and multiple subdomains, for example domain.fi, online.domain.fi, mail.domain.fi, or imap.domain.fi. Usually, there is no limit to the number of subdomains that can be secured with wildcard SSL certificates. Additionally, multi-domain certificates are available, allowing a single certificate to protect multiple domains such as domain25.fi, domain30.fi, and domain-abg.fi. Depending on the certificate, even up to 100 different domains can be secured with a single certificate.
EV SSL certificates provide the strongest encryption available and allow the organization behind the website to present its verified identity to visitors.
